Trico's path goes around the courtyard (descending from pillar to pillar, along the enclosing wall, then leaping from the rim across to another building), but the player can drop into it if they wish. For an area that's completely optional and very easy to miss, it's surprisingly large and detailed; between that and the blue butterflies around, I wonder if there were originally a barrel or two placed here.
